Elon Musk was an early supporter of OpenAI and provided funding for the development of ChatGPT. However, he now believes that the GPT-based generator has become too politically correct and advocates for a more truthful AI model, which he calls “TruthGPT.” As part of this effort, Musk is putting together a team to take on ChatGPT.
Concerns over the impartiality of OpenAI’s text-based AI platform ChatGPT have prompted Elon Musk to seek out AI experts in recent weeks. The Information reported that Musk has been attempting to recruit Igor Babuschkin, a machine learning model specialist who recently left Alphabet’s DeepMind AI division and worked on the models used by ChatGPT.
Musk’s criticism of ChatGPT
In 2022, Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but has since departed, criticized the organization for introducing safeguards that prevent ChatGPT from generating text that could potentially offend certain user groups. Musk referred to this move as an attempt to “train AI to be woke.”
Elon Musk recently made a remark that sparked the creation of a project called TruthGPT, which aimed to develop a chatbot using the underlying technology of the cryptocurrency industry. The project requested Musk’s assistance.
In recent weeks, Musk has highlighted several peculiar stories related to AI, including Bing Chat’s inclination towards making “creepy” comments and ChatGPT’s presence in the mainstream media. Despite the world’s fascination with ChatGPT and artificial intelligence, Musk maintains his position from five years ago that AI is “far more dangerous than nuclear weapons.”
Why Musk turned against ChatGPT
In 2018, Elon Musk resigned from OpenAI’s board of directors and divested his ownership stake in the company.
Although OpenAI began as an open-source nonprofit, it has since become closed-source and for-profit. Musk has clarified that he no longer has any investment in OpenAI, nor does he serve on its board or have any authority over it.
One of the reasons for Musk’s departure from OpenAI in 2018 was the growing amount of AI-based technology being developed by Tesla, which he did not want to create any conflicts of interest. Another major factor was OpenAI’s relationship with Microsoft, which had made significant investments in ChatGPT, including a $10 billion investment and a dedicated supercomputer for processing.
